History
The rule of the Gaur Rajputs over Sheopur was established around 1584 AD by Raja Indra Singh Gaur, who maintained ties with the Kachwaha rulers of Amer and expanded his domain by subduing local tribal chieftains to annex the southwestern tract of Baroda. For over two centuries, the clan held sway over the territory from the strategic Sheopur Fort, navigating Mughal vassalage and rising Maratha dominance. In 1809, after a fierce siege led by Jean-Baptiste Filose on behalf of Maharaja Daulat Rao Scindia of Gwalior, the Sheopur fortress was captured and incorporated into Gwalior State. Consequently, the Gaur rulers were granted the Baroda estate as an autonomous thikana (guaranteed jagir), making Baroda their new dynastic seat until the estate merged into the Union of India following independence in 1948.
